Derwin parked his car down the street rather than using the underground parking. The address Theresa had given him was a high-end luxury apartment building over fifty stories high, near the downtown financial district with a view of the bay on one side and mountains on the other. There were probably people living in the building who were legitimate, law-abiding citizens. However, Derwin suspected that there were also other Tatsu bosses and members in residence, or at least employed there. That might include security team, parking attendants, and even the doorman.

He was still wearing the same clothes from the meeting in the park, and still had the same weapons on him—he’d reloaded his gun. As before, his weapons were hidden in the sweats, but he wouldn’t pass a close inspection or metal detector.

The doorman was an older man, and regarded him with skepticism. “May I help you . . . sir?”

Derwin nodded at him. “I’m here to see Roy Yoshiro. Pretty sure he’s expecting me.” He’d toyed with the idea of involving the authorities, but there was Mei to consider. It was best to keep this case private.

The doorman gave him a once-over. “I can ask the building receptionist to check with Mr. Yoshiro. He’s a very busy man.”

It was difficult to see inside through the tinted windows, but Derwin tried to anyways. “Let me speak with the receptionist myself. Mr. Yoshiro is going to want to speak with me now rather than later.” Because if this didn’t work, he was going to find a Tatsu member to hold hostage to get him inside.

With a scowl, the doorman opened the doors. “Come inside. Please do not cause a disturbance.”

Derwin grinned. “Who me? As long as Mr. Yoshiro behaves civilly, so will I.” He brushed past the doorman and tried not to gawk at the lavish interior of the lobby. High ceilings, a grand staircase—where did that lead to? Did the building have a ballroom for fancy parties? There were an awful lot of doors on the ground floor. Any one of them could be concealing Tatsu members. The space between his shoulders itched as he crossed to the other side of the lobby.

A blond woman wearing a bright-yellow dress sat at an antique desk, complete with an antique phone. Derwin strode up to her, leaving the doorman behind. “I’m here to see Roy Yoshiro.”

She appeared young and unathletic, but there was a hardness to her, and now that he was closer, Derwin saw that she had a tiny tattoo of a dragon behind her left ear on her neck. Her clothing appeared expensive but professional. Like the doorman, she sneered at his casual sweats. “Name?”

Well at least she hadn’t told him to buzz off. “Derwin Bryant. Tell him I’m here to speak with him about two people: Elliot Leed and Mei Chun. He’ll know who I’m talking about.”

The woman jotted down the names, and picked up the phone. She dialed, and Derwin overheard it ringing, but no one answered. He bit his cheek in frustration, and she shrugged.
